When can you photograph the aurora at Fairbanks?

Interior Alaska has a dry, continental climate — far clearer nights than the Scandinavian coast — and sits close enough to the oval that aurora is a near-nightly bet in season.

What decides a good night here

• Geomagnetic ~65° puts the threshold around Kp 1–2; the interior sees aurora most clear nights from late August to mid-April.
• The continental climate means genuinely clear, cold nights — the opposite problem to maritime aurora spots.
• Get away from Fairbanks city glow (the hills north of town, or Cleary Summit) for a dark northern horizon.

Honest note: The cold is the real constraint, not the aurora — dress for the gear as much as yourself, and the sky mostly cooperates.
